Our Master of Business Analytics program prepares students for modern-day statistics, analytics and data science applications. It includes rigorous foundations in statistical thinking, probabilistic modelling and computational techniques. In the final semester of the program, students have an option to do an internship project.

1 General features of all projects

  • The work is at a graduate level (final-semester Masters students)
  • They can involve individual students or small groups (2 or 3 students)
  • The projects can be standalone or part of an existing wider team at the host organisation
  • Minimum outputs for all projects:
    • Written report
    • Presentation
    • Git repository
  • Some projects involve creating additional outputs, such as software or dashboards
  • Reproducibility is a key feature of all projects.

We teach our students to use modern reproducible practices. They will be comfortable with tools such as Git, GitHub, Quarto and Shiny, and can use them to build reproducible analysis pipelines and automated reporting. These skills distinguish our students and our program from offerings at other universities.

  • rspatialdata is a collection of data sources and tutorials on visualising spatial data using R, produced by Dilinie Seimon and Varsha Ujjinni Vijay Kumar
  • sugarglider creates glyph maps that visualize seasonal aspects of spatio-temporal data, written by Maliny Po

The projects have contributed broadly across the community, for example:

  • Victorian Government department: developing, implementing and testing an anomaly detection method.
  • Medium-size data-driven consultancy: analysis (natural language processing) of social media posts for a telecommunications client.
  • Small consultancy in the health policy: exploratory analysis and visualisation of data from patients with mental disorders.
  • Multinational professional services: detailed exploratory analysis of the company’s previous and planned projects, to improve understanding and inform project management.
  • Alfred Health and Ambulance Victoria: analysis of patient transfer patterns between hospitals and aged care facilities, including how these changed during the COVID-19 epidemic.
  • Large life insurance company: developing dashboards and interactive visualisations to be used for exploring customers’ experience, and the usage and performance of partner programs.
  • 360info, an evidence-based journalism publisher: involved sourcing data and developing visualisations appropriate to the story that was being reported on.
